Overview
It's back on!
Looking for a great way to kick off Rogaining for 2012? Try a romp through the beautiful highland marshes and forests near Derwent Bridge.
Course setters
Bernard Walker and Phil Stigant
Location
The area is about 2.5 hours drive from Hobart heading towards the West Coast on the Lyell Highway. The Hash House is approximately 7km east of Derwent Bridge. There is ample room for camping at the Hash House. 12 hour entrants are strongly advised to camp rather than attempt to travel after competing.
Terrain
The area is a combination of button grass/alpine gasslands and eucalypt forest with both grass and heath understorys. The terrain is mostly undulating but part of the area extends steeply up to the Central Plateau highlands. For those who venture up you will be rewarded with lakes, tarns, alpine moorlands and views to the Cradle Mountain/Lake St Clair National Park. Throughout the area there is a network of roads and tracks varying from insignificant bush tracks through to a major bitumen road.
Map
The map is based on the existing 1:25,000 land series maps with updated tracks and other significant information. It will be printed on two A3 sheets at a scale of 1:33,333 and will have 10 metre contours. Magnetic north lines will be overprinted.
Courses
There will be a 12 and 6 hour option. Normal rogaine rules apply. Navlight electronic timing will be used.

2012 Australian Rogaining Championships
5th-6th May 2012
The South Australian Rogaining Association's Oz Champs committee is organising a fantastic Australian Rogaining Championship at Parachilna Gorge in the central Flinders Ranges on 5 – 6 May. Walk the dry creek beds meandering through spectacular gorges flanked by magnificent gums so prominent in the paintings of Sir Hans Heysen. See the wildlife at the waterholes, climb the heights and have an eagle's view over the 'Land of the Oratunga'. Come and share this once in a decade premier South Australian event with rogainers from Australia and overseas.
The course caters for everyone from novices to the elite. There are controls close to the hash house with equally scenic experiences for novices and an option to enter a roving 12 hour non championship event which, if you wished, could avoid the hours of darkness .

MTBNav-Bush at Virginstow, Parramatta Creek
Sunday 5th August 2012
Overview
A very extensive network of roads, tracks and paths exists at Virginstow which is about 1km north of Parramatta Creek and just south of Sassafras getting near Devonport in northern Tasmania. The course area is mainly plantation forest, with some native bush. The terrain is gentle to undulating and surfaces are smooth to rough, but it is suitable for both experienced and less experienced riders and walkers. There is a choice of a two or four hour event, either on bike or on foot. This is the first year for this event, its pedigree arising from successful MTBNav events in southern Tasmania over the last three years.
This is a Team Rogaine for two to five people where participants devise their own route to visit as many controls on the map and thus collect as many points as possible in the time available. Teams need to be fully self sufficient with food and drinks, and carry first aid gear. Very good bike riding and walking are available in what is a very extensive plantation area.
While walkers may traverse the bush in this event, riders may only ride on formed roads, tracks and paths. Being a bush venue, a little riding or walking experience helps, however, less experienced participants can still enjoy the event by sticking to terrain with which they are comfortable.
Ride Bellerive is supporting this event. Start of the four hour is 10.30am and start of the two hour is 12.00 noon. Sportident electronic timing from Orienteering Tasmania will be used. Light refreshments will be provided from about 2.00pm with presentations at around 3.15pm.
Entry
Entry can only be submitted and paid for through the online EntryHUB system when it comes available, accessible via the Rogaining Tasmania website at http://www.rt.asn.au/. Cost is $35 per person per event, or $25 per person per event for a full time student aged 25 years or under, and includes the light refreshments afterwards. A $10 deposit per Team for one e-Stick per Team for use with the Sportident timing system, that is refunded at the finish when the e-Stick is returned, applies to entrants without an existing e-Stick. There are no late entries nor enter-on-the-day for this event. Enquiries may be directed to Mark Hey at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. MTBNav-Metro on Eastern Shore, Hobart
Sunday 21st October 2012
Overview
With the choice of a three or six hour event, on bike or on foot, this is the MTBNav that started it all in 2009 and is the fourth to be held. It is a Team Rogaine for two to five people where participants devise their own route to visit as many controls on the map and thus collect as many points as possible in the time available. Of all the MTBNavs, this one is the most suitable for youngsters riding with their parents, and for less experienced riders, as much of the riding is on hard surfaces on paths and roads. Being a suburban area, there are many opportunities to visit a café along the way. If a Team finds the riding or walking too tiring it is just a matter of staying in the flatter areas, or returning to the assembly area at any time.
Course area is huge being the eastern shore of Hobart from Government Hills at Geilston Bay in the north to the tip of Tranmere in the south. Bounded by the River Derwent to the west, the course to the east includes Pilchers Hill, Stringy Bark Gully, the Meehan Range near Mornington, and Knopwood Hill behind Howrah. One of the aims of the event is to have participants visit as many tracks in the bush reserves on the eastern shore as is feasible. Riders may only ride on formed roads, tracks and paths, whilst walkers can go wherever access is legitimate.
Assembly, start and finish are at a venue being decided in either Lindisfarne or Bellerive. Ride Bellerive is kindly supporting the event. Start of the six hour is 10.00am and start of the three hour is 12.30pm. Sportident electronic timing from Orienteering Tasmania will be used. Light refreshments will be provided from about 3.30pm with presentations at around 4.30pm.
