Welcome
Welcome to the August 2011 Newsletter.
It has already been a bumper year for the sport in Tasmania with Rogaining Tasmania successfully hosting the Australian 24 Hour championships in January, and we've now got three great events coming up to finish off the year.
Entry is now open for the upcoming MTBNav-Metro event which will be held on the Eastern Shore of Hobart on Sunday 25th of September.
This event will be closely followed by a second MTBNav-Bush and foot event on October 30, and to finish it all off, a 12 and 6 hour foot rogaine will be held out at Clarence Marshes in early November.
Check out the event information links below, and start putting your teams together soon.
MTB Orienteering event this weekend.
Can't wait that long to get out there on the bike, or maybe want a bit of practice with that map board? Well check out the link below for information on Orienteering Tasmanian's MTB orienteering event coming up this Sunday 28th August out at Belbin's Road, near Cambridge.
MTBNav-Metro Mountain Bike and Foot Rogaine
25th September 2011
… it’s on again …that navigation ride or walk on the Eastern Shore of Hobart ...
For those who enjoyed participating in the 2010 MTBNav-Metro, and for those who would like to explore the Eastern Shore in a different way to usual while getting some exercise, this event is for you.
Rogaining Tasmania is again conducting the MTBNav-Metro six hour or three hour rogaine-style event, able to be completed either on a mountain bike or on foot. Course area is the Eastern Shore in Hobart between Tranmere and Geilston Bay. Start and finish are at the Scout Hall in Ford Parade, Lindisfarne.
The event is for Teams of two to five people to navigate to visit controls set-out in the course area, accumulate as many points as possible, and return to the finish. The Team decides which route to follow using the map provided, abiding by road safety rules and only going where there is legitimate access. Different controls have different points values. It is a navigation challenge to work out how far the Team is capable of travelling, and to return to the finish within the strict time limit.
Timings on 25/9/11 are as follows:
Registration opens for six hour 08.15 am
Maps available for six hour 08.30 am
Pre-Event Briefing for six hour 09.45 am
START OF SIX HOUR 10.00 am
Registration opens for three hour 10.45 am
Maps available for three hour 11.00 am
Pre-Event Briefing for three hour 12.15 pm
START OF THREE HOUR 12.30 pm
FINISH OF THREE HOUR 03.30 pm
FINISH OF SIX HOUR 04.00 pm
Light refreshments available 03.30 pm
Presentations for both events 04.45 pm
Normal road and pedestrian laws apply. All riders must wear an approved helmet whenever riding, including when on a bush track. A compass may be useful in bush areas for foot orienteers, but is probably unnecessary for riders. While all participants carry their own food and drink, there are places to stop for a coffee or an ice cream. Controls are electronic using the Sportident e-Stick system from orienteering, with an e-Stick loaned to non-orienteers. Light food refreshments are included in the entry.
Riding is permitted wherever it is legitimate and appropriate to ride. Most riding will be on roads and tracks whether concrete, bitumen, gravel or dirt. Foot participants can traverse any ground or bush where access is legitimate.
The map for the event consists of two A3 sheets with an overlap in the centre, and the scale is 1:15000. Reading the map is akin to reading a street directory. Contours are all 10 metres.
Entries
Entry can only be lodged and paid for online – go to the EntryHub website at http://www.entryhub.net. Entry close-off is midnight Wednesday 21st September 2011.
Late entries at an extra cost of $10 per person are available until noon on Saturday 24/9/11. Enter-on-the-day is unavailable.
Cost for entry by 21/9/11 is $35 per person or $25 if a full-time student 25 or under. A $10 refundable fee per team applies for a Sportident e-Stick – orienteers can use their own e-Stick.

Overview
It's back on!
Looking for a great way to kick off Rogaining for 2012? Try a romp through the beautiful highland marshes and forests near Derwent Bridge.
Course setters
Bernard Walker and Phil Stigant
Location
The area is about 2.5 hours drive from Hobart heading towards the West Coast on the Lyell Highway. The Hash House is approximately 7km east of Derwent Bridge. There is ample room for camping at the Hash House. 12 hour entrants are strongly advised to camp rather than attempt to travel after competing.
Terrain
The area is a combination of button grass/alpine gasslands and eucalypt forest with both grass and heath understorys. The terrain is mostly undulating but part of the area extends steeply up to the Central Plateau highlands. For those who venture up you will be rewarded with lakes, tarns, alpine moorlands and views to the Cradle Mountain/Lake St Clair National Park. Throughout the area there is a network of roads and tracks varying from insignificant bush tracks through to a major bitumen road.
Map
The map is based on the existing 1:25,000 land series maps with updated tracks and other significant information. It will be printed on two A3 sheets at a scale of 1:33,333 and will have 10 metre contours. Magnetic north lines will be overprinted.
Courses
There will be a 12 and 6 hour option. Normal rogaine rules apply. Navlight electronic timing will be used.

Volunteers Needed
Bernard Walker is seeking 1 or 2 volunteers to help put out controls for the Clarence Marshes event to be held in early November.
So if you're unable to compete on that weekend, or the idea of a slightly more leisurely wander over the map interests you why not contact Bernard and help out.
If you might be able to help, send Bernard an email at bernard.walker@brwsolutions.com.au.
until next time ...
